Greetings All, I teach in RSU 54 grades 4-8 technology integrationist. I have been with the district for 27 years and 10 years as tech person. Before that, I taught social studies and language arts grades 6-8. I have been teaching digital citizenship in grades 6-8 this year and have had great success with our digital generation;) View

I have to say, when I read your post, Ruben, I felt much better. It is good to know that there are indeed higher level designers and courses out there. I am particularly interested in your comment about the […]

I think Ruben is right on here…lowest common denominator sounds right to me. This seems the best way to seek those more interesting providers!

Absolutely Bill!! This is what I have been trying to say about online learning…unless we have classes that have those tools to transform learning and reinforce the SAMR model and TPCK…what do we have? We have […]

I prefer small online groups and then a larger face to face meeting, but I can also see the merits of getting together soon to process information discussed already, and to set specific goals.

When I think about the transition to online learning for our public schools, I find myself focusing on the needs of the learner. In the classroom it is so important that the teacher look at each student and work […]

Interesting article in the NYT today:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/16/magazine/how-computerized-tutors-are-learning-to-teach-humans.html?src=dayp

Koedinger is convinced that learning is so unfathomably complex that we need the data generated by computers to fully understand it. “We think we know how to teach because humans have been doing it…[Read more]

I meant to add that sub groups(onine) for in depth research and whole group(online) for sharing discoveries. I also think that this forum is very good and that perhaps we need to meet as a whole group face to face at a later time.

I got a message that I successfully “unsubscribed” to the group, so I hope that is a mistake. I am still here;) I agree that we should work in sub groups as Ruben initially recommended. To borrow a phrase from Ford in the 80s, Quality is Job One. While things can’t be perfect before moving forward, I think we need to be reasonably sure we aren’t putting our students in harm’s way as we proceed. I’m reminded of how one district stated its decision making priorities…Students first, teachers second, administration third. There…[Read more]

Laura, I definitely agree with your concerns around quality. You and Commissioner Bowen both referenced some of the recent concerns about virtual charter schools in Florida. I am most concerned with the allegations that some of these schools falsified certification or asked teachers to state that they were teaching students that they weren’t. …[Read more]

I agree that quality is key. I think we need to first be clear about what quality is when talking about online learning. I also think the criteria for quality is different depending on the purpose. Is the online learning being used as a fully virtual experience or is it a blended learning environment.

You are quite right!! Our tech team was disbanded when the members ventured too far in their normal curiosity regarding everything from exploring terminal to by passing some of the unneeded filters. I believe it is because schools are still functioning on the obsolete industrial model…they are set up to prepare individuals for the work force of yesterday. School leadership must embrace the realities of the 21st century and take a good long look at what has changed since the model was established. For some strange reason, education and the…[Read more]

That is great that you are starting with the lower grades. Can you imagine if all schools began teaching this as early as K, 1??? Well, I had a student come back to me this year to tell me that the imaginary yellow, green and red light in his head actually saved him from posting something he would have lived to regret…if we can at least impress upon our students the importance of thinking before posting, it will be all worth it. Keeping them safe and helping them gain the…[Read more]
