Maine Arts Education Leaders 1 year, 1 month ago A quick follow up to Argy’s link to the video of Dr Rice and Joel Klein. What she was saying is that she benefited from the arts, she didn’t really say it was the school-based arts education. Mr Klein did say that NYC schools were adding real time to the arts education curriculum. Here is another article based on analysis of data across the USA.

Hey all
I was so pleased to hear Joel Klein say that the New York City schools increased the overall time for the arts, due to a longer school day. This action is countered by another, recent report, overall, the arts offerings in elementary schools in the USA is down overall. Reports like this are published all the time, cut, cut cut. How can we create collaborative artistic, new solutions to these persistent trends.

Hi Jeff,
Yes, I read that article, too, about elementary schools in the US cutting arts offerings. What I don’t understand is, how can Arne Duncan be saying, in one breath, that it is unfortunate this is happening, and at the same time continue to advocate for standardized tests, linked to teacher evaluations, race to the top and other initiatives, when we know that this causes pressure on teachers and creates the very climate that compels people to cut the arts?
