Hello, Everyone! Our final face-to-face meeting for middle level CDLN in Hampden met on Wednesday, May 1. Although we are a small group we had some great discussions centered around MCL, the ELA Shifts, and the Webinars of which we've all been a part. Our initial icebreaker activity asked the participants to think of things they are currently doing in their classroom that relate specifically to MCL and the ELA shifts. We asked participants to note these on the center & petals of a large, paper flower for representation purposes. These included the uses of matrices, unpacking the standards, posting standards, rigor in literature, complex text for book selection, the EDUCATE system, using close reading, and the benefits of the webinars, especially the Text Dependent Question webinar. Next, participants were asked to think about how their classrooms would look, sound, "feel" like - 5 years in the future with respect to the ELA Shifts. We mapped responses on chart paper with sticky notes to note similarities and differences. It was remarkable how much we seem to have in common in our vision. Once again text complexity and rigor were at the forefront, with close reading and TDQs also included. Lastly, we did a task rotation assignment in which participants were asked to relate what they had learned in the webinars to their current practices. This sparked some lively discussions and again a consensus among participants as to TDQs, close reading, and rigor and complexity in text. We ended with the online survey and certificates of contact hours for the participants. It was a great evening, and Heidi & I would like to thank our group for being so wonderful in participation.

Girls' Summer STEM Adventure on Mackworth Island (June 24-July 11) - openings for high school girls this summer!! This program will lead students through the process of DESIGN THINKING to develop and implement service projects that solve an authentic problem in Southern Maine. Community partners (leaders of business, innovation, and civic stewardship) will be assigned to project teams, and will present the groups with a real life conundrum or challenge. The teams will work together to generate creative solutions, products, systems, prototypes to solve these problems. Other aspects of the programming include adventure-based team building; use of computer programming language, Lua, to develop "apps"; site visits to local businesses and industries; and social work groups.
The REAL School received a grant from Maine Women's Foundation to support this pilot program. We are accepting applications/referrals from schools who can identify girls in grades 9-12 who may have an aptitude or interest in STEM subjects, but who are unlikely to fulfill their potential or to develop aspirations in those fields due to socioeconomic or cultural factors. For more information, contact Susan at The REAL School: 207-781-6207. Slots are filling up quickly, so please call soon!

Hi all
KIDS is offering a 2-Day Service-Learning Planning and Implementation workshop, August 20-21 in Freeport. Below is the complete info! Let me know if you have any questions! Happy May Day!!!

Service-Learning Planning and Implementing Workshop
When: August 20-21, 2013; 8:30am to 3:30 pm
Location: Freeport Middle School Library, Freeport, Maine

Service-learning is a hands-on, learner-centered teaching strategy that challenges young people to work with community partners, applying academic knowledge and skills to solve real problems and needs. Through service-learning, students develop and demonstrate proficiency of standards (Common Core and Next Generation Science) , including essential 21st century skills - critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and team work.

This 2-day training will help participants develop a basic understanding of KIDS Consortium’s award winning service-learning model. Through interactive games and visuals, participants will learn the difference between community based learning, community service, and service-learning, and why service-learning is an effective teaching strategy. You will be prepared to implement a high quality service-learning project using tools and strategies from our KIDS As Planners Guidebook and have time to plan "how to" integrate service-learning in to your teaching environment and receive feedback on your ideas.

Registration is required. Fee is $300 and includes the KIDS As Planners Guidebook, contact hours certificate, light breakfast and lunch each day. Please visit our Website to register. We accept, check, PO’s, and credit card payments: http://www.kidsconsortium.org/getting_started.php

Here’s what participants have said about this workshop:
“The graphic organizers that illustrate the service-learning process were very helpful. Each activity we did helped in the learning process. I feel much more prepared for guiding my students through service-learning.”

“I enjoyed the time you allowed us to digest, reflect and try parts of the information/activities presented.”

“I am inspired to return to my science students and provide them with more voice and choice…I am so passionate about environmental stewardship, yet I was reminded of the importance of stepping back and letting the students take the lead.”

Good Morning! Isnt this just a dashing spring?
The OH group had an intimate gathering Monday evening. We continued discussions around the Publisher's Critera, discussing for clarity and connecting to recent discussions/professional development that has occurred. Leveled text, guided reading, close reading, and text complexity are still issues at heart. We discussed professional resources available to people and reading children's literature to cross the bridge in to CCSS. The participants briefly shared their experiences with the webinars and the some of the fantastic learnings, particularly the group that use Thinkquiry strategies.

Hello All! The small but talkative CDLN group met yesterday. We jigsawed the Publisher's Criteria, discussing the major parts and implications for instruction. We then shared highlights of a variety of webinars. It would have been nice to have more time with the webinar material. Not everyone was able to view their sessions.

Hi Everyone! I am the facilitator for the K-5 group that meets in Saco. We have had some great conversations around the CCSS Instructional Shifts document. It is such a gift to have time to network with like-minded colleagues. I am looking forward to our last session tonight. We will spend some time with the Publisher's Criteria document and share ideas and learning from our webinar sessions. Has anyone else met for session 3?
